Putting safety first in Maui, all the high school football games scheduled for the opening weekend have been called off. The wildfires that have caused significant harm have tragically claimed over 30 lives by Thursday morning.
Baldwin’s match on Saturday against Edison from Huntington Beach, California, a team nationally recognized, won’t be taking place. Due to the island’s emergency situation, the Chargers, positioned at 113th in the preseason national rankings by High School Football America 300, as powered by NFL Play Football, have decided to cancel their planned nine-day, two-game journey.
Edison had plans to play against Lahainaluna, a team ranked 9th in the HSFA Hawaii Top 10 preseason statewide rankings. Unfortunately, Lahainaluna’s opening game against Hilo has also been canceled.
According to hawaiinewsnow.com, there are reports that many coaches from Lahainaluna have had their homes damaged due to the devastating fires.
Here is the list of games that have been canceled so far:
- Edison at Baldwin
- Honoka’a at King Kekaulike
- Kamehameha-Maui at Castle
- Lahainaluna at Hilo
- Maui at Nanakuli
