The command of the US Armed Forces and the country’s government may delay the withdrawal of troops from Iraq after reaching appropriate agreements, said the special representative of the Russian President for Syria, Alexander Lavrentyev. In his opinion, as quoted by RIA Novosti, at the moment Washington is not ready to withdraw troops from the country, since this decision would be a demonstration of weakness. It would be especially pronounced against the backdrop of the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, Lavrentyev notes.
The Americans, as it seems to me, will delay the resolution of this issue in every possible way, because at the moment they are not ready for this,” he said.
Earlier, Iraqi Defense Minister Sabit al-Abbasi said that the country’s army is ready to take control of security after the withdrawal of coalition soldiers to fight the Islamic State (the organization is recognized as a terrorist in the Russian Federation, its activities are prohibited). The timing of the withdrawal of foreign military personnel and issues of further building cooperation are planned to be discussed in the coming days, he noted.
As previously reported, US aircraft carried out a series of strikes against militia targets in Iraq. It is believed that the strikes were an American response to an attack on the Ain al-Assad military base. In total, about 20 missiles were fired at the base.
