There are no prerequisites for resuming the dialogue between the United States and Russia on arms control yet, Mikhail Ulyanov, the permanent representative of the Russian Federation to international organizations in Vienna, said in an interview with RIA Novosti. According to him, now Washington’s policy is aimed exclusively at aggravating bilateral relations.
There are no prerequisites. On the contrary, all US policy is aimed at aggravating our relations. Nobody probably knows what the new treaty will look like (after the expiration of New START in 2026 – NEWS.ru). This will depend on the state of affairs in the international arena, on the state of affairs in the military-political sphere,” the agency’s interlocutor noted.
Earlier, the director of the Department for Nonproliferation and Arms Control of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Vladimir Ermakov, said that the fate of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty ( START ) depends on military-political realities, which are now poorly predicted. According to him, the United States has radically undermined the fundamental principles on which the agreements were formed – the country does not want to come to terms with the loss of total dominance and is seizing on any illusory opportunity to slow down the objective course of historical processes.
Before this, the commander of the US Strategic Command (STRATCOM), Anthony Cotton, said that Washington was considering the issue of the composition of nuclear forces for the period after the end of the New START Treaty in 2026. According to him, the Pentagon needs to understand whether it has enough nuclear weapons given the challenges ahead.
