High School Football America sends its thoughts to those who have been affected by the destructive fires on Maui. While the serious wildfires have led to the cancellation of all matches involving Maui teams, Week 1 of the 2023 season did proceed on other islands.
In the most significant match of the weekend, No. 2 Punahou recovered from being down 14-7 at halftime to defeat No. 3 Mililani 21-14 on Saturday night. Punahou’s defense managed to record six sacks during the victorious game.
Both teams have retained their preseason rankings in the first in-season High School Football America Hawaii Top 10, which is supported by NFL Play Football.
This upcoming Friday, the Buff n’ Blue are set to play their first of two mainland teams as they host Long Beach Milikan from Southern California.
Kamehameha Kapalama has made the most notable jump this week, rising from No. 10 to No. 7 after securing a 51-7 victory against Moanalua.
Kahuku, holding the top spot, started their season with an impressive 49-0 victory over Wai’anae. In the following week, the Red Raiders are scheduled to compete against No. 4 Saint Louis, who emerged as winners (42-28) in Week 1 against the former No. 7, Kapolei.
