Ecuador provided Russia with the necessary documentation with technical justification for the phytosanitary department to allow the import of bananas, said the head of the Ministry of Foreign Trade of the Republic, Sonsoles Garcia, in an interview with the Ecuavisa TV channel. According to her, the country can refute any arguments against fruit exports.
The Ecuadorian government wants to get to the bottom of this from a technical point of view, and we are confident that we can refute any arguments against the export of our bananas,” she said.
According to Garcia, the humpback fly was first discovered in bananas in 2018. Since then, Ecuador has taken the necessary steps to combat the insects.
Earlier, Rosselkhoznadzor introduced a ban on the import of carnations grown in Ecuador through the countries of the European Union: Germany, the Netherlands, Lithuania, and Latvia. Appeals were sent to these countries asking them to stop certifying flowers as of February 9.
Rosselkhoznadzor also limited the import of bananas from Ecuador into the Russian Federation. This decision was made due to identifying a quarantine object (a polyphagous humpback fly) in them.
Associate Professor, Department of Economic Theory, Russian Economic University. G.V. Plekhanova Ekaterina Novikova suggested that against the backdrop of the decision of Rosselkhoznadzor, bananas will rise in price by 20–30%. She also expressed the opinion that supplies of these fruits to Russia could be significantly reduced.
