Soldotna, a high school football team that has won the Alaska championship twelve times, is now ranked as No. 1 in the initial 2023 in-season High School Football America Alaska Top 5 list, powered by NFL Play Football. This change comes after Soldotna defeated the previously ranked No. 1 team, Lathrop, with a score of 56-20 on Saturday.
In the years 2021 and 2022, Lathrop had triumphed over Soldotna in the Division II championship games. The victory in 2021 marked the end of Soldotna’s streak of eight consecutive state titles.
Following this outcome, Lathrop’s ranking drops to No. 4 for this week.
Bettye Davis East, which was initially ranked No. 5, has now moved up to the No. 2 position this week due to their 21-6 victory over the preseason No. 4 team, Juneau-Douglas/Thunder Mountain. As a result, the Huskies have descended one position to No. 5 in the most recent statewide rankings, which are generated using our special algorithm.
Another change sees West entering the Top 5 at No. 3 after they secured a 41-20 victory over the reigning Division I champion, Colony.
